New York City Joins Massachusetts Limiting Salary History Questions

On April 5, 2017 the New City Council approved legislation to prohibit employees from asking about prospective employee’s salary history during the hiring process.

Massachusetts was the first jurisdiction to ban employers from asking job applicants about salary history in order to prevent cumulative pay disparities. The theory is that this provision will prevent “carryover’ pay discrimination that can accumulate throughout women’s careers.
